Knife

The knife is made of a fine grain carbide. Carbide is extremely hard and has very good wear resistance. The fine grain results in a very smooth cutting edge and so, a very smooth profiled reed. Carbide is extreme hard but also brittle, you have to take care not to hit the knife against a hard surface because this can damage the knife.

Only a small part of the knife is used during profiling. Because the knife is round you can turn it to a fresh part when a part is worn out. You can use 8 parts of the knife which enlarges the knife lifetime enormously. 2 flat surfaces on the knife form a line which is used as pointer to set the knife on one of the 8 positions.

The knife has a circular groove around the outer diameter which is used to position the knife in an exact height position. This assures the exact repositioning of the knife when you change to one of the 8 positions, or when you change to a new knife.
